How to Reorder or Delete Pages in a PDF

Pages in the wrong order, a blank page in the middle, an outdated cover sheet? Here's how to rearrange and remove PDF pages in your browser, without a paid PDF editor.

PDFs are designed to look the same everywhere, which also makes them feel hard to change. Yet some of the most common fixes are simple: a scanned page ended up in the wrong place, the scanner added blank pages, or a document includes pages the recipient shouldn't see. You don't need a paid PDF editor for these. This guide shows how to reorder and delete pages for free, directly in your browser.

The tool: Merge PDF, with just one file

Merge PDF is built for combining documents, but it shows every page as a separate, movable card, and it works perfectly well with a single file. That makes it a convenient page organiser:

  1. Open Merge PDF and choose your PDF.
  2. Every page appears as a thumbnail in the page list.
  3. To move a page, drag it by its handle to the new position.
  4. To delete a page, press the delete button on its card.
  5. Give the result a name and press "Merge & Download". You get a new PDF with the pages in exactly the order shown.

Your original file is not changed. You always get a new copy, so you can try again if something isn't right.

Removing many pages at once

If you want to keep only a few pages out of many, deleting them one by one is slow. Split PDF is faster for that job:

  • In the "Range" tab, add a range for each block of pages you want to keep, for example 1 to 3 and 8 to 10.
  • Tick "Merge all ranges into one PDF file".
  • Press "Split PDF". The new document contains only those pages.

The ranges are joined in the order you list them, so this is also a quick way to move whole sections: list 8 to 10 before 1 to 3, and pages 8 to 10 come first.

Replacing a page

To replace one page with a corrected version, for instance a signed page instead of an unsigned one, add both the document and the PDF with the new page to Merge PDF. Delete the old page, drag the new one into its place and download. If the new page is a photo or scan, first turn it into a PDF with Scan to PDF.

What about rotated pages?

Merge PDF and Split PDF keep pages exactly as they are, including their rotation. If a page in your PDF is sideways because it was scanned that way, most PDF readers let you rotate the view, but to fix it permanently you need to recreate that page: convert it to an image with PDF to Image, then use Image to PDF, which has a rotate button for each image, and put the corrected page back with Merge PDF. For future scans, the image-based tools let you rotate before creating the PDF.

Does reordering affect quality?

No. Pages are copied into the new file without being re-rendered, so text stays selectable and searchable and images keep their full resolution. Each page also keeps its original size and orientation.

Things to keep in mind

  • Bookmarks (the outline panel) of the original document are not carried over to the new file.
  • Interactive form fields may stop working. Fill in and flatten forms before reorganising them.
  • Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked with their password in a PDF reader first.

Private by default

Documents that need tidying up are often contracts, reports and scans with personal data. Everything described here runs inside your browser, so your PDF is never uploaded. You can rearrange and download as many versions as you like.
